Archeologists have established that people lived in the Porirua area as far back as 1450 AD with Ngati Tara, Ngati Ira, and later Ngati Toa settling in the area.

Long before schools have been established in Porirua, we have seen Poly groups and Kapa Haka groups in action. Schools in Porirua continue the tradition of celebration of Pacifica culture in Te Kiwa Nui.

Polyfest has existed in one form or another, in Porirua, for the past 45 Years. From its humble beginnings in the late 70s being hosted in school halls, the festival has grown from strength to strength in both number of participants and quality of performance. Due to this, Te Kiwa Nui festival has used the prestigious Te Rauparaha Arena as its venue for the last 15 years as it is the only venue in Porirua that has the capacity to host the festival.that has the capacity to host the festival.
